Welcome! I am so excited to have you as a member of the learning community for the 2015-2016 school year. I trust that we will have a fabulous year exploring the various reading, writing, and literary genres. As we implement the Missouri Common Core Standards, our goal is to strengthen our reading and writing skills as well as to refine our skills in the areas of grammar and usage.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Eighth grade Language Arts is a yearlong course designed to prepare students for serious literary studies in the secondary setting and beyond. Students will read a variety of literary genres while improving their reading skills. Attention will focus on appropriate strategies for analysis and synthesis of literature as building the basic reading enrichment skills. Writing, viewing, test preparation and research will be key components of the coursework.
Corrective Reading provides intensive direct instruction-based reading intervention for students in Grades 3–Adult who are reading below grade level. This Direct Instruction reading intervention program delivers tightly sequenced, carefully planned lessons that give struggling students the structure and practice necessary to become skilled, fluent readers and better learners. Four levels for decoding plus four for comprehension address the varied reading deficits and skill levels found among older students.
Materials Needed: 4 Spiral Notebooks (1 per quarter) & pencils
Cell Phone Policy: Students are not allowed to have their devices out while in class. Teachers make the decision of when and how students may use technology devices in the classroom. This year the expectation is: Cell phones or other devices “MUST BE Silent” while in the classroom.
Classroom Expectations:
1. Arrive to class on time
2. Have necessary materials daily
3. Use appropriate language – no profanity
4. No eating, drinking, and/or grooming in the classroom
5. Respect self and others as well as the property of others
6. Use computers and reading materials appropriately at all times
7. Follow the three classroom rules
Classroom Consequences:
1. Verbal warning
2. Student Conference
3. Parental Contact (Phone call home or letter of concern)
4. Teacher Discipline (detention, silent lunch, or behavior reflection)
5. Parent Conference
6. Discipline referral
Course Weightings: Classwork 30%, Test 30%, Quiz 30%, and Homework 10%
Homework: Homework will be given on Mondays each week to reinforce the skills that are introduced in class. If students do not have a homework assigned for a particular day, please encourage your child to review class notes and/or spend 20-30 minutes reading a book, magazine, or newspaper.
Feel free to contact me by e-mail, I will respond to your e-mail as soon as possible.
